CupKate's Truck - Oakland

Before I graduated and left the area, I had to make one final cupcake stop: hunting down the CupKate's cupcake truck.  As it turns out, it was parked the Thursday before graduation right outside a BART station and close to a Peet's Coffee (where I was determined to get a Hibiscus Tea as well which you can see next to the box below), so with SR in tow (my official Bay Area Cupcake Shenanigan's Partner) we went out for one last adventure.  Finding it was pretty easy and, despite a rather long line, it wasn't long before I ended up with these (forgive the cellphone pictures, I didn't bring my camera with me for some reason and couldn't resist):

At the top we have a Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee, which was very rich but really delicious. A great little crispy Brulee on top which I enjoyed, but I did not finish this one.

Below that on the left you have the REASON I went - the Salted Caramel cupcake. A closer picture of this beauty so you can see just how wonderful it looked:
But how did it taste? It was described as a chocolate cake, caramel frosting with a sprinkling of salt to bring out the flavors more.  This was really good, though there was too much frosting (which didn’t really have a flavor that I could identify) for me - the huge pile of it made it very messy to eat, which isn’t as enjoyable for me.  The salt was a great addition and the chocolate cake was so moist and delicious. I would have loved to have just had a larger piece of the cake with no frosting at all.

The other was the Red Velvet which has become my base cupcake with which to judge most places. Another close up, taken after I had already tasted it as I had forgotten until then, but this also shows the red color:
This one also suffered from some transit issues, and part of the frosting had already started to fall off.  It was decent in terms of flavor, not outstanding (as my notes are very brief on this one), but the limited cream cheese frosting didn't hurt it any. Not outstanding, but not bad.

Overall, if you are close to CupKate's, then go for it. Check their website or their Facebook page to find out where they are. The Creme Brulee isn't there every day, so if you are seeking that out, check to see if it's available before you head over.
